i think one of the biggest problems with the marauders as written is that we never really get to see what they were like when they were kids?

like, the only accounts we have are heavily biased or seeing them at their worst, or at least in extreme situations. we don’t know what they were like in class, or just hanging out, not really. and i think this is where the fanon thing of peter not being a real marauder came in – because we only really see him as this loathsome traitor, not as one of the kids willing to learn a really difficult branch of illegal magic just to help out a friend.
