unsung hero of venom 2018: doctor dan lewis

the man who for once, in the entire history of movie boyfriends, does not give a shit that his girlfriend is within 100 yards of her ex, only that her ex is very ill and needs some tender loving care because wtf is that black space blob

I’ll be honest, the entire move was my favorite part of this movie, but I have a deep, deep love and respect for Dan (and Anne, but that’s another story). I don’t think I have EVER seen a character like him in a romcom before.

He doesn’t get angry or weird about Eddie showing up at their apartment, he respects Eddie (knows that he is, at heart, a good person because he has watched Eddie’s segment on TV and is glad he’s going after bad people) and he trusts Anne to handle herself. They obviously have a lot to work out, and he shakes Eddie’s hand and earnestly tells Eddie he admires his work, and then leaves them to it.

At the restaurant, he doesn’t get mad at Eddie for the way he is acting, even though Eddie interrupted their date, even though Eddie is causing a scene that they are now attached to, even though Eddie is upsetting Anne, because Dan understands that something is wrong that Eddie can’t fix. When the restaurant worker is about to call the cops, Dan could absolutely wash his hands of the entire situation and let Eddie be taken by the cops; he’s sitting in a lobster tank eating a goddamn live lobster after rampaging through the restaurant taking food off people’s plates and yelling. The cops would absolutely take him and then Eddie would be their problem. But Dan doesn’t even hesitate to say no, don’t call the cops. He doesn’t even just say “we’ll take him to the hospital” he straight up claims Eddie is his patient and immediately goes to help him.

And after the scans, he absolutely could nope out of the situation again. After sending Eddie home, he could have passed the baton to someone else. But he looks at the scans and he realizes Eddie is in very strange danger, and he requests Anne’s help in finding Eddie, involving HER in the situation with Eddie again. And like, you can tell Anne still cares about Eddie (she’s pissed at him, still, and absolutely rightly so, and she does not want to get back together with him but she still cares, and that’s ALSO refreshing). Dan could have been a macho pissbaby and tried to keep her out of it, but he knows she’s their best shot at getting Eddie help, so he doesn’t even hesitate. He helps.

And then after all of that, a literal fucking space alien blob comes out of Eddie and shit gets REALLY WEIRD and Dan STILL doesn’t back down. He wants an explanation, and who wouldn’t, but he doesn’t throw a tantrum, he doesn’t walk away from the situation, and by the end of the movie, he hasn’t left. And he’s not out there lording over Anne and Eddie as they have coffee and talk about stuff on the front stoop.

He was just a genuinely good guy, caught up in some weird shit for his gf. I liked him a LOT, and I hope we see more of that type of character in the future.
